Does anyone know how harmful it is to drink about 1 to 2 beers a night before going to sleep? I am allergic to over-the-counter sleep aids or anything that has antihistamine in it, and I'm not about to start taking prescription medication for that. I find drinking a beer or two right before going to bed lulls my mind into a calmer state, and I fall asleep much faster and easier. I realize being dependent on anything is bad, but I don't want to have cirrhosis of the liver in a few years from drinking a beer or two before bed. Someone told me a beer a day is not harmful, sometimes may even be beneficial. I am not sure about this. Can anyone help answer?

I don't know about a couple beers every night, but when my wife was having problems with her bladder, the Doctor told her to drink a couple of beers a week, and it did help. It has it's benefits but it also has it's drawbacks. If you are going to stay with the two beers a night, at least go with the lite beers. One should be efficient. It's probably better for you than some of the water we drink. Just don't let it get to three, four, five or more, then you'll be hooked on it. There's an old saying that comes from the Bible, and that is, do everything in moderation, in other words, don't over indulge in anything, because to much of anything is not good for you, cigarettes, whiskey, donuts, steaks, beer and so on. Don't ever start taking sleep aids, they are really bad for you and are habit forming. Cirrhosis is mainly caused by whiskey and drugs. So if it helps you, go for it, just keep it at a minimum. Good luck to you sir.

Some people do use beer to lull themselves to sleep, but I'm not a genius. This may be something you can ask your doctor. If you start drinking more than one or two a night, and the numbers start increasing, though, that might be a good time to stop. Also, you could try wine. The oldest man that ever lived had a glass of red wine every day. I'm pretty sure he lived to be 121 years old. Try it! Couldn't hurt. And I don't blame you for not taking medication. ;)
