"Human use of Aloes are primarily as a herbal remedy in alternative medicines and "home first aid". Both the translucent inner pulp as well as the resinous yellow exudate (gel) from wounding the Aloe plant is used externally to relieve skin discomforts and internally as a laxative. To date, research has shown in certain cases that Aloes produce positive medicinal benefits for healing damaged skin, however there is still much debate regarding the effectiveness and safety for using Aloes medicinally in other manners.

Some Aloes have been used for human consumption. For example drinks made from or containing chunks of aloe pulp are popular in Asia as commercial beverages, and as a tea additive. This is notably true in Korea. The gel was once used on children's fingers to stop nail-biting."

"Aloe Vera has been used to heal both internally and externally. It greatly speeds the healing of many skin injuries, including ulcerations, burns, hives and poison ivy and also acts as a laxative. Aloe latex is a powerful laxative, but because it can cause painful cramping, it is not used frequently for this purpose. Other milder herbal laxatives such as cascara sagrada and senna are usually recommended first.

Aloe use has also been suggested in connection with diabetes, ulcers, and other conditions. However, presently no conclusive clinical studies have supported this assertion."

Many people will have heard of aloe vera in the context of skin care. But what is aloe vera?

Well, aloe vera is a plant that belongs to the well known Lily family of flowers. It looks a little like a cactus, and has been used for its medicinal properties over the years - though only a couple of varieties have medicinal properties.

Much of the plant is water, but the outer leaf contains a sap that is used for lotions and gels and is beneficial. Rich in many vitamins and minerals, all together, these can have a powerful help in skin care.

Aloe vera can be used on the skin to help with many conditions, for instance bires or scrapes, eczema or mild burns.
