I know that hiccups are just spasms of the diaphram, but I still don't get why drinking soda causes them. Anyone care to explain?

I don't think it is so much the soda cause drinking any liquid will cause hiccups if you swallow enough air while drinking. The swallowing of air is usually the culprit.

I would have to say no because I am a huge mountain dew junkie and i drink sometimes up to 10 a day. Im sure you have tried things but have you tried drinking water upside down? You bend at the waist with and have a glass of water use the opposite side of glass(part away from you) and drink as much as you can. This always works well for me & i hope it works for you! Best of luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hiccups are caused by the diaphragm spasming. Pop can cause them because of the bubbles. The gas in the soda. Not the sugar. It some how irritates it. Which is weird because the last medical study I read about how to stop them was a teaspoon of sugar. It seems that the bubbles in the pop cause them, then the sugar in the pop should stop them. Oh well such is life. I have trained myself to instantly stop the hick-ups whenever they start. It took a while but it works now every time. oooooOOH strange but true..LOL Good Luck!
