Lots of activity in the hours leading up to bed - preferably physical. Also if I have a lot on my mind, I try the mental trick of putting those problems up on a "shelf" (use your imagination). And telling myself that I will look at them in the morning.

If you have trouble sleeping, as millions do, first see your doctor, tell him / her what your problem is and get a complete blood work up to make sure there is no underlying medical problem that is causing this problem. Sometimes we have so much on our minds, it just keeps active no matter how tired we are. Cut off caffiene completely and alcohol at night because when the alcohol wears off you wake up so you only get a full 3 or 4 hours until you have to pee. Then you are up for the rest of the wee hours.

Go to sleep every night at the same time and don't nap at all during the day. You must get yourself on a workout schedule as well, same time everyday, or evening. This will train your body. It will take a long time but worth the effort. One more important thing, never eat at night and cut that salt intake down or cut it almost completely if you can't completely cut it from your diet. Most don't realize what time they eat and what they eat effects the sleep. If you have been on medication and not taking it now, that would do it as well, so just talk to doc, maybe you weren't taken off it the right way. Some meds, you have to be weaned off. Sleep nice, think of the beach, lying there in the sun and the sun fades behind the tree and you are lying there and the sensuality of the breeze when it crosses your body, - relaxing. I still have to use this thought to fall asleep sometimes when i can't clear my head of other things keeping me awake. But like I said, it could be more than that, medical reasons keeping you up.

Let the brain slow down calmly from the exertions of the day. For the last half hour before you go to bed, don't do anything that taxes or worries the brain too much, like catching up with the world news, doing a cryptic crossword or the household accounts or reading Einstein. You could do a few minutes' silent meditation if you have time and an understanding partner.

Make sure the room is dark enough, so you don't necessarily wake up at the crack of dawn just because your curtains are too thin. An eye mask like the ones they give out on aeroplanes can help.

Avoid stimulating food or drinks late at night, obviously.

If you have very young children, I'm afraid the only thing you can realistically do is be patient for a few years.

Getting good exercise does help. Also if you work really hard during the day, physically, then you should be ready for sleep at the end of the night. Write stuff down that is bothering you or on your mind. Make list of thing for you to do the next day. Stretch and do deep breathing to loosen up. Take a nice hot bath. Cut the TV off. Read something interesting. Make sure where you sleep is nice and cozy. Plan a good hour for you to go to bed and make it so! Best of luck!

Staying in bed until you fall asleep wont really get you the quality sleep you need. Be active during the day of course... but the real clincher I've found works for myself is to use my brain.... I know, I know, that sounds kind of weird, but I find that if I'm studying something, and REALLY using my brain, after a while I am SO tired. And I get some pretty deep restful sleep. Whether or not that would work for you is something you have to find out for yourself though. Good luck. I hope you get that good nights sleep. Have an awesome day :)

First, see your doctor or call a medical careline where you live and explain your symptoms to them to rule out any conditions requiring medication. Now try this, do not drink any caffeine after 6PM, Next make sure that your bed is comfortable. Do not do anything in bed but sleep in your bed. If you routinely do homework, office work or pay bills STOP! you are telling you body that it is time to work when you go to bed. Then get some lavendar potpourri and place it on you bedstand or in your pillowcase. You can buy loose weave material at a material shop that will let the smell escape and tie the ends with a ribbon. Drink some chamomile tea and honey. You'll get used to it. The last thing you do is get a relaxation CD at any bookstore and play it for one half hour before your bedtime while you are getting ready for bed. Develop a routine so your body knows that you are getting ready to sleep.

Either you do not get enough exercise to be fit and tired enough to sleep well or you let too many little things in life bother you mentally. The first is rather easy to solve the second takes some real effort. Too many people fret and worry about things they can do nothing about. Getting involved too deeply in other peoples lives causes a lot of the mental anguish. Also quite often people actually sleep more than they think they do. Awake time seems to go so slowly we think it is a long time and it really is not. So many things can be involved so take a very good look at your life and see where you and make changes to help you cope better.

The most expensive piece of furniture in your home should be your bed. Don't stint on expense here, because this is the piece of furniture which will most affect your life, sleeping and waking.

Make sure you have a dark, clean, dry, warm, quiet place to sleep. Go to bed at the same time every night (ten minute window). Try to get accustomed to living without an alarm clock.(if you are getting enough sleep, you won't need one.) Have a nighttime routine that lasts about an hour before you go to bed. eg. shower/bathe, change into jammies, read a book in a chair beside your bed, use the toilet, then bunk down. Lie down in a position most comfortable to you, close your eyes, and daydream. Most people take 7 - 20 minutes to get to sleep.

The most important factor in getting a good night's sleep is regularity - training your body to have a regular sleep schedule. Not only will you sleep better, your sleep will be more productive and you will wake up feeling better. Supposedly 7 hours is a reasonable minimum, though you can probably get by with less if you're disciplined about it - again, regularity is key. Another really important factor is the removal of disturbances - noise, for one, but more importantly, ANY light at all, even a tiny bit of light, is disruptive of sleep. You will get a much better night's sleep if it's in the pitch black.

Finally, before you go to bed, think about when you want to get up. This will help your body adjust its internal clock properly so your sleep cycle will conclude naturally at the appropriate time. Sounds like mystical mumbo-jumbo, but it works.

Don't watch television or use the computer for a half-hour before you go to bed. Make sure that all lights are off. Lights stimulate chemicals in your brain that keep you alert. They actually suggest that children who play an excessive amount of video games have a difficult time sleeping from all of the light stimulation coming from the television.

When I want to get a good nights sleep, I take deep slow breaths, even If I am still breathing fast. I tend to think of repetitious things, such as ocean waves, that are calm and relaxing, and keep the mind's focus on one thing, instead of different things that keep you stressed.

I keep a pillow between my knees to keep my spine aligned, so that I do not toss and turn trying to find a comfortable position.

Doing that makes ya more tired.

There are several tips I can give you:

1) Make sure you make a lot of physical activity during the day.

2) Make sure your bed is comfortable enough. If you have to pay extra for it, keep in mind that there is no price high enough for a good night sleep.

3) Do not take any cofee or cafeine products (coke, tea, etc) during afternoon or evening hours.

4) If you have too many probems in your mind, keep a notebook writing those in order of importance and details. This will remind you to solve them the day after and not keep them in your mind.

5) I am against any chemical means to have a night sleep, beacause the effects are out of your control and gets addictive and less efficient with time.

6) If you need to drink something, do it with lettuce tea or water.

I rarely ever get a decent nights sleep but I do every now & then.(I have a 3 month old that gets up every 3 hours.

I try to keep a routine ever week night. I eat supper, clean kitchen, fix lunches for next day, and then get a shower. After I wm done with everything I lay in teh bed & discuss my day with my husband. The sound of his voice soothes all my tensions away & I feel less stressed & eventually we both doze off.

Use a CPAP machine.

I was having difficulty getting quality rest for years, but did not know the cause until my wife told me I snored all the time. When I checked into a sleep clinic for tests, I found that I did have sleep apnea.

Since using a CPAP, I can tell the difference on nights that I use it and nights that I forget to use it. It dramatically changes my quality of sleep.

1. Keep active during the day so that you actually reach a moment in the evening when you are tired. Do some physical exercise and exercise your brain by reading or talking to friends.

2. Set your alarm for 7 hours sleep. (You may need to adjust the amount of sleep you have - some need 8 hours others only 6 - but once you have found how many hours per night you need stick to it most nights. )

Repeat every day. The key is to get your body into the right rhythm.

A couple years back I was a house guest at a friend's cottage and had to sleep on a spare bed in the hall. It was so pitch black dark they had to give me my own flashlight in case I needed to get up. I was last up next morning and didn't want to get up. Sleep was totally relaxing like watching a movie in a very dark thearter. Now I sleep soundly with only one very dim night light on at the far end of the room plus the dim red dial of the digital clock. Also, I've added a small special contoured foam pillow that provides proper neck and back alignment and have wrapped the foam inside a plastic bag inside the pillow case. No more dust and dust mites! I can breathe through my nose again. Now I sleep like a baby (but have richer dreams?). Good luck.

Sleep hygiene is important. Cut out caffeine after lunch time. Reading before going to bed usually will help. Go to bed only when you are sleepy. Keep your bedroom dark and make sure your digital clock is covered with something so it's not glaring at you all night. When you lay down, take 10 long, deep breaths. This is very relaxing. If you still have problems, see your primary care doctor about getting a referral to a sleep specialist. Take care and good luck.

No disturbing TV , exciting, scary etc. before bed. Very cool dark room. Is your bed comfortable, not too hard/soft, saggy or other problems? I like to sleep on air. I put a pillow speaker under my pillow with something boring on the radio, ie: the weather station, some talk show that is boring, or if it works for you soft "elevator music". Play it quiet, like barely heard conversation from another room. Warm soothing bath before bed, maybe a small glass of warmed milk. Fantasize about being somewhere else on an adventure, think it as a story, or a dream, you will want to finish it in your mind but won't be able to because you will fall asleep.

If you wake up too many times, it could possibly be sleep apnea, or other sleep disorder, see a doctor.

When you feel sleepy, directly go to sleep, especially at night; never entertain any thought that will cause disruption in your sleepiness. This is my quick way of getting a good night's sleep.

Second, don't drink too much liquid as the body will excrete it fours hours later when you are in the middle of your sleep and lastly, a short prayer will do induce sleep (i.e. to thank God about the day's activities and a hopeful tomorrow to come). Have a blissful evening and a good sleep, dear...

1) Make sure your bedroom is restful. Clean bedding, comfortable bed, opaque curtains, tidy room without distractions.

2) Have a wind-down routine. Lay the table for breakfast, choose your clothes for tomorrow, pack your bag for work, etc then get washed and undressed, telling yourself you are off duty now. Make sure you have nicely scented soap, face cream, etc to relax you.

3) Once in bed, if you are still wakeful, then read a chapter of a favourite book, drink a soothing drink (herbal tea, hot water, hot chocolate or hot milk are all good). Don't eat a meal just before bed but don't go to bed hungry either. If you are hungry, have a digestive biscuit, banana or bowl of cereal. Have a set time for switching off the light and stick to it.

4) If you find it hard to sleep because of worries, then have a little notepad and pen beside the bed. Write down what worries you and tell yourself that you will deal with it in the morning.

5) Many people find it helpful to pray or meditate while falling asleep.

I have found that not watching television helps. I get upset with all the things going on in the world. Get your mind off of the bad stuff. Get a hammock and lie in it with a good book (not violent) and some tea - preferrably some of the relaxing kind. Make sure you are eating correctly and exercising some. Also, take your multivitamins. I don't really like pills, but if it persists, maybe ask your doctor about a short term prescription to get you back on track. Once on track try to go to bed at the same time if possible.

There is an all natural remedy available otc in most stores. It's called Melatonin. It is naturally made by your body and when your bodies natural levels are low or you are stressed you can't get to sleep. Melatonin that you buy will increase what you are lacking and therefore you will sleep the night through and actually feel rested the next morning. It is perfectly safe and non habit forming. My children have been using it for 2 years and I havbe been using it on/off for about 6 months. Let me know if it helps and sweet dreams to you.

First of all, try getting home at a reasonable hour. If the job is a 9-5, be home by 6-6:30pm. Eat a well-balanced, light meal. Take a warm bath and try to get in bed no later than 10pm. Also, try putting on a soft music station (classical really isn't bad!) I didn't think I could take the music part, but combined with the bath, it really lulled me to sleep. I'm sure it'll work for you.

That's a tough question. There's lots of variables involved in getting a sound nights' sleep. Like having a good mattress to start with. And clean, fresh from the dryer sheets & pillow cases. Also, make sure you spent some time outside, even in really cold weather. Exercise is important too, giving your muscles something to be weary about. Don't eat for at least 3 hours before bed. Make sure your bedroom shades are pulled down, blocking any street or car lights. If, after you've laid in bed for more than 20 minutes and you just can't seem to fall asleep, try putting the radio on a station that plays easy listening music, and put it on low, creating a soothing background noise. They also make machines that play what's called white noise...something to concentrate on that makes it easier to drift off to sleep. It often keeps you asleep too, even if you wake up during the night. Try spraying a soothing aromatherapy fragrance in your room. Putting a little dab of Vicks under your nose can help you breathe better, and giving you something soothing to smell at the same time. Taking a hot shower and using a soothing aromatherapy soap can help you relax too. Taking a sleeping pill isn't always the best last resort, unless you've been unable to get a good nights' sleep for several nights in a row. You might then talk to your doctor about your situation. There might be other reasons why you can't sleep that he can check out. Sometimes, all the days' troubles pile up in your mind at night, and you keep going over and over them, trying to sort them out. Just remember, there's nothing you can do about it during your sleeping hours. Tell yourself that you'll work on it in the morning, giving yourself permission to relax. Besides, night or day, worrying never worked out any situation. These are some of the things that have worked for me. Sometimes, I've had to just stay up all night, answering questions on this site, before I could finally be tired out enough to sleep the next night. Hope some of these tips help. <*)))><

Sometimes I get no dreams, the types of dreams that have daydreams in it and no other "real" dream.I only get those when I'm really tired or just not thinking of anything truly important.

And other times I get real dreams,I get those if I have many things occupying my mind at the moment.

But the ticket to get a good night's sleep is to have a comfortable bed or environment in which things are stable.Relaxed, good mattress, perhaps a little soft to ease or eliminate some of the back pains momentarily.

Drinking would do no good, trust me.

Looking at the stars or trying to not fall asleep works sometimes too.

You've got a lot of good advice.

I find that if I take one cap. 3MG of MELATONIN (SOLARAY) a half hour before bed time in a cool bedroom that I can get quality sleep time. This particular brand has Valermint, a combination of Valerian and peppermint plus vitamin B-6 and other ingredients. As with all over the counter drugs

products read the label and follow directions.

I recommended this product to others and the swear by the results. Good night and sleep tight, and if the bed bugs bite, bite them back. Smile

1)Make sure the bedroom is quiet and dark. Occasional noises, such as aircraft fly-overs disturbs sleep in people.

2)Exercise in the late afternoon.

3)Don't think of the problem when you go to bed. Just forget about it and tell yourself that you will better to solve problems after a good night of sleep.

4)Keep the room temperature comfortable.

5)Go to bed at the same time each night.

6)Avoid taking naps in the middle of the day. Doing so decreases the chance of you being able to go to sleep that night.

you might want to try a better matress. if thats not he case, try buying a cd of water, or something peacefulll, set a small cd player in your bedroom if you dont already, and play the cd at a soft volume. you can also try meditating to some peacefull music before sleeping. you can also try hot tea, before bed, or any combonation of the above. i used to have a horible time falling asleep ans staying that way. i found that these things helped. i found some websites to help you out. 2 are for tips on meditating, and the other is tips for a good nights sleep. if you don't like the meditation part, then don't worry, do whatever workes for you, it might take a while to find something that works.

Ever feel like you don't want to be in bed when it's time for you to go to sleep, but when you have to get up, you want nothing more than to sleep another 2 or 3 hours?

Try to switch those situations in your mind. As soon as you go to sleep, just think how grateful you are to be in your comfortable bed - think how some guy in Australia is cursing at his alarm clock, and think about how much that guy would love to be you right now, and why. A warm bed is freaking comfy. You just need to make yourself understand that when you go to bed every night.

That's what I needed when I had this problem, anyway. Hope it helps.

I used to have sleeping problem long time ago...... so long that i almost forgot those days until now after reading your question. Now the moment i get into bed i m gone (sleep tight :) ,

how and why?

I now have to kids, one is 3 1/2 yrs and one is just turned 5 months old.................. Now i want to sleep and i can, only if someone else could take care of my kids. So when i go to bed after finishing ( or leaving something for other day) my work. I don't have to wait for good night';s sleep as i m now blessed with good night's sleep.

I learned this when desperate: Lay in bed. Begin with the feet. Tell your feet that you can no longer feel them and that they are warm all over, they are relaxed and ready for bed. Move to the calves and ankles. Move to the thighs. Get to the tummy. Tell your tummy all is well and that you are now ready for bed. You are warm and fuzzy, ready for sleep. Tell it to relax. The mind has command, you know. Tell the arms. Get to the shoulders. Then you get to that wonderful mind, remind it that it needs to wind down so you can have a healthy body, be productive, and use the mind to the fullest. It take ten minutes or so and it works. Got the tip from Carolyn Myss, PhD who has a web-site. Go there, check it out. It's free.

From personal experience I would get in a comfprtable reasonaly dark place where you can relax. Try to let go all the stresses of th day. Earlier beforehand try to wind down before you rest by reading or watching TV. From the experts : don't drink cafeinne or do strenous excercise right before sleeping. Think positive sleep well!

Try to get regular hours, set a comfortable temperature and make sure nobody wakes you up.

I don't agree with taking drugs to get to sleep, unless there is some underlying reason, such as illness or anxiety that prevents relaxation and sleep.

It's best to eat a while before bedtime and try to empty the bladder shortly before going to bed. I usually wake up after about four hours, but can usually get back to sleep without any problems.

Make sure the room is silent and dark, the air is cool (cooler air temp tells the body its time to sleep) and the bed is warm. Also try a glass of warm milk. Milk contains an amino acid called Tryptophan a natural relaxer and its hard to sleep on an empty stomach.

I used to really have a hard time sleeping, waking up at any noise. I cured that living in London with 4 French roommates. Now I can sleep through armageddon or at least a frenchman singing opera.

I find that a routine works. I sleep 8 hours a night. I go to sleep at 11 and wake up at 7, even on weekends (unless I am out later, but I don't let myself sleep past 9). I find that if I excercise later in the day I have a harder time falling asleep so I work out in the morning or at lunch. If I have something on my mind I do yoga, and it helps relaxes me.

Well, your head needs to be clear. If you have too much going on upstairs, it can be very difficult to fall asleep. Learn to quiet your mind and relax for a while before bed, too. If you work-out before bed you are going to be hampered from sleep as well because your body is too wound up to sleep.

If you have trouble quieting your mind, there is a medication that can be taken once before bed. It is temporary as I needed to take it for a month and that helped a lot. They used to play commercials about it all the time and probably still do. You know what I'm talking about. It's a safe drug.

Hope this helps.

It's best to sleep in a cool, dark room. If you have trouble with light, I suggest getting an eye mask. You can get them fairly cheap at drug stores. If you're having trouble with noise, ear plugs are very inexpensive and will block out any noise. In terms of sleeping through the night, it's best to establish a schedule and stick to it. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, is best, because your body will adjust to "sleeping" time versus "awake" time. Sweet dreams!

You have asked a good question here. Regrettably you brought it to a location on the Internet where good people could unintentionally give you bad counsel, even as I have done, here on Yahoo Answers. Your question is more important than that and you should seek a more qualified assessment than you might find here.

If you can't sleep you really should go see your doctor. I did and I'll be going in next month for a sleep study to find out what is really going on with my sleep problems.

There are some places on the Internet you can type keywords in to find web sites with a world of information that can help. Some are http://search.yahoo.com , http://google.com , and http://Ask.com just to name a few. There are other search engines on the Internet that are highly specialized in the kind of help you seek such as http://www.webmd.com/.

Good luck in your sleep endeavors and I hope you find the answers you seek.

Disconnect the phone, shut your cell phone, warm up some milk, get in PJ's and run the bath lukewarm to hot, add bubble bath soap into it. Light up some soothing candles in the bathroom. drink the milk, lay in the tub and close out the world. Relax. let all the tensions leave your body. Once you feel totally relaxed and loose, dry up, back in your PJ's and hit the sack. Make sure there is no light source in the room. Cover up, close your eyes and you will be able to sleep.

Once you get up 8 or 9 hours later remember to reconnect your phone and activate your cell phone. get into a ROUTINE every night and you will be able to get to the point where you will sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. Thats how fast I fall asleep.

Try: cutting out caffeine a few hrs before u go to bed, physical activity that will enhance ur body's ability to want to rest, & I do that putting "thoughts" on the shelf at night thing too--amazing that someone else does that, I must've heard it on t/v. or the radio? Anywhoo, I don't condone drinking alcohol because it's addicting & u will need more & more over time to get to sleep. Hope this helps ya!

Do not drink anything with caffeine in it after noon time and try not to worry about things when you go to bed.Give yourself 7 or 8 hours and maybe use a little lavender aromatherapy . You also need a comfortable good mattress and a decent pillow. The room needs to be a comfortable temperature for you.If all this still doesn't work, try the herb valerian root.Good luck!!

I try to keep my dinner to a medium don't overstuff myself but don't starve myself either. (Thats at about 7PM) After 8PM I do not eat anything else for the evening. About 9:30 I warm some milk on the stove. (Regular size mug) add a bit of vanilla extract and 1 equal. At about 10:30 i am ready to sleep. I have to keep my feet covered cause the slightest chill will keep me awake. After that the milk takes over & I am out for the evening.

1. Don't sleep over 6-7 hours cos you will feel lack of energy during the day.

2. Don't watch any scary movies or anything that make your heart beats fast.

3. Drink milk cos the protein will help you sleep.

How do I? I don't and I wish I did. I have really bad insomnia. It comes and goes throughout the year.

Good question, though and I shall put it on my watch list because there are some interesting answers on here.

Ambien does work. It will put you back on a regular sleep schedule. Other than that...don't try and force yourself. It will only make it worse. Good luck and good night.

By winding down before bed. An hour before you are to go to sleep just relax, turn off the TV, listen to some soft music or read a book.

I agree with Sarge.

I used to play Disney's Fantasia or some ballet suite music for my siblings- It worked like a charm each and every time! Also try meditation. Focus on your breathing instead of your work day. Massage your temples slowly with light pressure, or try resting your head on a heating pad.

Physical activity can wear you down physically. Try a brisk walk or swimming. A hot shower after a good workout is really great!

I can not fall asleep without a fan and when I was younger and had friends sleep over they fell asleep really fast when I had the fan on.. After that they all now use a fan to fall asleep even if it is a cold day.. I don't know if this might work for you but it works wonders for me so give it a try..

choose your time. follow it religiously. make it a habit. when you choose to sleep at 12, you'll close you eyes at 12, and do it regularly. make sure you'll sleep for approximately 6 hrs. less or more isn't good either. after a week your body system will be comfortably following the habit. later you'll discover you'll be having a decent nights sleep.

Get a dog to walk with and then begin walking 2 or 3 miles everytime that you can.You will both love it.

If you can get to a spot that is more peaceful than the middle of town, then do that.

There are places that you can go into safely with a dog than when alone.

They are a walking alarm system and they need you as much as you need them.

They will always be ready for that walk and they will prompt you for it when you get too busy.

The dog need not be a big one,a small one can out walk you.

It can change your life and prove to be a lot of fun.

I do what the sleep experts say, keep my bedroom dark, no tv, no food in bed, no lap top. I listen to music or tv programs that aren't jarring or noisy about an hour before . I also tend to do the square breathing exercises when I lie down. Empty my mind of any thoughts or worries while I inhale for four beats, hold it four beats and exhale for four beats as I count down mentally from forty.

Have yet to make it to one.

I used to have this problem then I took some Melatonin 2-3 tabs 20minutes before bedtime, that used to bring the Sandman on.....You can also try Magnesium........Valerian root takes couple of days to work.....Also take a nice warm shower/bath when you come home from work, that should help you relax....Also have a good dinner close to bedtime, so you are not hungry when you go to bed.

After all the chores are down, and the kids are in bed. All I have to do is lay down. Doesn't matter what time, I lay down I go to sleep. Now if I could eliminate the need to get up early and go to work, I could get a really good night's sleep.

try to read a book while lying down on the bed, it's kinda uncomfortable so after a while u'll unconciously throw it on a side and fall asleep. Otherwise u can try a half hour workout before taking a nice bath and go to bed. That works pretty well but it's time consuming.

Just get to bed early enough.

I usually sleep like a baby if I can get to bed early enough. I'm usually pretty tired, but just bring myself to go to bed very early. I typically get 5-6 hours of sleep during the week, and 8-11 hours on the weekends when I'm off work.

I take "ambien" to sleep at nite. At first it was great. now it seems to linger in the AM hrs. and realy messes my morning up. All/most of the nite time medicine contains acetametaphin. this, in time is not good for your body. It's the diphahydromine that makes you drowsy. Cunsuming alcohol may lead to a bad habit forming sleep-aid. Sometimes depression and or anxiety causes your mind to race when your laying there with nothing else to think about. Im pretty sure that most of us will be "watching" for the best "answer", here...good luck ya'll : )

If you don't like sleeping pills then try carbs. Bread or Meat (anything hard to digest). Also try very hard to clear your mind of everything. This is not easy. If you go down a mental rabbit trail then just gently push the thought aside. All these work but the best is good old sleeping pills.

Take a warm soak, get ready for bed. Kiss everybody goodnight, turn on the fan and get under the covers. If I can't get to sleep because of aches and pains then I will take an Advil and try again. If you are having trouble, picture yourself already asleep in your mind. it will work.

One tends to lose sleep because of stresses of everyday life.Whether it be anything from a work deadline or a school assignment,we stress over it.When it weighs on our minds it becomes almost impossible get rid of,but dont allow that to happen.Control your thoughts and know when they need to be put aside for a later time, such as when you need sleep. Now,first off i would recommend drinking a warm cup of decaffinated tea or a cup of warm milk. This will help you settle and calm yourself.Next, relax your mind and put those nagging thoughts out of your mind.Allow yourself to relax and understand that those things can be finished at a later time.Get into bed,and lay there, and allow yourself to relax. Those nagging thoughts and pressures are all in your mind nothing more.Once you allow yourself to release those thoughts and allow yourself to relax you will start to feel your muscles relax and release themselves of tension and you will in turn start to feel tired or sleepy and you will begin to drift off.Good luck and i hope this works for you.

P.S. I would not suggest you use an over the counter sleep aid as one can become dependant on them. Also,it is in your mind and you do not need any medication to be able to relax yourself.

Monstrous amounts of sex just before!!! lol

Also....... go to bed when you feel tired, not too much after that time or strictly by the clock either. Exercise is of the utmost importance to health and a good workout or run will add to your solid rest. Try those new foam mattresses. We spent 2400.00 on a king size one and it was an excellent investment. They

contour to your body. You rest better.

you don't say how old you are as we get older our bodies need less sleep ergo:less sleep. I do not have any bright lights on and I avoid looking at any light (TV) as it is thought to reset your body's sleep/wake rhythms...also i cannot sleep on an empty stomach i am good w/ yogurt or a piece of string cheese! OK hot COCOA is fab! and I listen to classical music (low) it distracts me enough from thinking to help me slip into sleepy-ville...If I awaken... I let my mind slide along on the music notes...and zzzzzzzz...OH!...i cannot do anything exciting like watch the news and I do meditate while horizontal...and sometimes I listen to Depaak Chopra's Rumi poetry...yes!

First, you should make your bed as comfortable as possible. Then, you should free your mind of all worries of the day. If that doesn't work, perhaps a sleep aid is needed, but usually if you're tired you can fall asleep rather quickly if you're totally relaxed.

Sleep tips for the perpetually awake

From MayoClinic.com

Special to CNN.com

Go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on the weekends. Sticking to a schedule helps reinforce your body's sleep-wake cycle and can help you fall asleep better at night.

Don't eat or drink large amounts before bedtime. Eat a light dinner about two hours before sleeping. If you're prone to heartburn, avoid spicy or fatty foods, which can make your heartburn flare and prevent a restful sleep. Also, limit how much you drink before bed. Too much liquid can cause you to wake up repeatedly during the night for trips to the bathroom.

Avoid nicotine and caffeine. These are addictive stimulants that can keep you awake. Smokers often experience withdrawal symptoms at night, and smoking in bed is dangerous. Avoid caffeine for eight hours before your desired bedtime. Your body doesn't store caffeine, but it does take many hours for it to eliminate the stimulant and its effects.

Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can help you fall asleep faster and make your sleep more restful. Don't exercise within two hours of your bedtime, however. Exercising right before bed may make getting to sleep more difficult.

Make your bedroom cool, dark, quiet and comfortable. Create a room that's ideal for sleeping. Adjust the lighting, temperature, humidity and noise level to your preferences. Use blackout curtains, eye covers, earplugs, extra blankets, a fan, a humidifier or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.

Sleep primarily at night. Daytime naps may steal hours from nighttime slumber. Limit daytime sleep to less than one hour and don't nap later than 3 p.m. If you work nights, keep your window coverings closed so that sunlight, which adjusts the body's internal clock, doesn't interrupt your sleep. If you have a day job and sleep at night, but still have trouble waking up, leave the window coverings open and let the sunlight wake you up.

Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow. Features of a good bed are subjective and differ for each person. But make sure you have a bed that's comfortable. If you share your bed, make sure there's enough room for two. Children and pets are often disruptive, so you may need to set limits on how often they sleep in bed with you.

Start a relaxing bedtime routine. Do the same things each night to tell your body it's time to wind down. This may include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music. Relaxing activities done with lowered lights can help ease the transition between wakefulness and sleepiness.

Go to bed when you're tired and turn out the lights. If you don't fall asleep within 30 minutes, get up and do something else. Go back to bed when you're tired. Don't agonize over falling asleep. The stress will only prevent sleep.

Use sleeping pills only as a last resort. Check with your doctor before taking any sleep medications. He or she can make sure the pills won't interact with your other medications or with an existing medical condition. Your doctor can also help you determine the best dosage. If you do take a sleep medication, reduce the dosage gradually when you want to quit, and never mix alcohol and sleeping pills. If you feel sleepy or dizzy during the day, talk to your doctor about changing the dosage or discontinuing the pills.

This and additional info can be found at my source.

Well, you gotta find a bed that is best for you. Not too soft, not too hard. Make your room as cozy as you think you'll like it. Empty your bladder, then have small (4oz) of very warm milk and sip on it then Go to bed! Sipping on the milk will sedate you to help you fall asleep. Having an Empty bladder will help you STAY alseep.lol

You can try using herbal supplements like valerian root (with or without hops), melatonin, and/or holy basil extract. You may also want to try having one glass of red wine before bed or a cup of decaffeinated chamomile tea before bed. I wouldn't recommend using over-the-counter sleep aids because they interfere with REM sleep, and that's the sleep you need (READ: The OTC stuff will leave you feeling tired, dopey, cranky, etc., the next day). If none of those work, you should see your doctor.

There are couple of things you can try,

@Have a bath before you go to bed, so that you can get mentally and physically realxed

@When you are at bed, close your eyes, try not to think about things which disturbs you, try not to get emotional, and if its really necessary to think about anything, try thinking yourself as you are on a beach, blue sky, blue water, cold air n all.. and keeps thinking like that and finally you will get a good sleep. simple :)

Hi,

I am a die hard insomniac. I was even on Ambien CR for awhile, and all it did was make me hallucinate! You really just have to calm yourself down. So, turn off the tv, the lights, and just breathe. Literally. I take deep breaths, and try to focus on only my breathing. 6 counts inhale and 6 counts exhale. Counting in your head will help you focus on the breathing, and anytime your mind starts to wander you tell it to stop. Really. In your mind, just say stop...and go back to counting out your breaths.

You'll fall asleep and won't even realize it!

i listen to my MP3 player before i go to bed and then fall asleep with the MP3 player still on...it makes you relax-the music-and another good tip is that if you have one of those small water fountains-the portable kind- in your room, put it to good use: the soothing sound of water also makes you want to fall asleep faster...do not drink any caffinated drinks, eat chocolate not sweets after 7pm...also, no coffee, frappucinos, etc! for me the best way to fall asleep is to have a hard day, then go and work out after you have dinner, take a shower and listen to music...sweet dreams...

I count my blessings, naming them one by one. I fall asleep and wake refreshed the next morning. I usually start with thanking the Lord for waking me that morning, getting me up and on my way. Then I thank Him for my home, family, friends, job, etc. I drive so I ensure a "Thank You" for getting to and from and protecting me from all dangers. Usually, I am sleep long before I get to all the above.

It amounts to a good schedule and tiring but fulfilling work as well as the ability to put said work behind you at bedtime.

To sleep well, start with your schedule. I don't know what your life is like, but here's the basic idea:

When you wake, slowly gear up for the day. You might meditate or watch the news (though it can be upsetting, whether you realize it or not), or read the paper with a cup of coffee. Find what works to make your morning relaxing and enjoyable and make that your routine. If you exercise, do that after you have geared up and then stretched, and follow with a shower and breakfast. What you do after this may vary-- it could be things around the house, errands, or work outside the home. Like I said, though, make sure it is something that fulfills you in some way and tires out your body, but involves movement. If you sit at a computer all day for work, get up and move on your breaks and do some of the same for lunch. Conversely, make sure you use your breaks to sit and relax if you spend the whole workday on your feet and/or moving around, which is the case for me. When your job stops being fulfilling, it is time to re-evaluate and decide if you need to find a new line of work. Otherwise, you will suffer sleepless nights over being unsatisfied. When you get off work, are done with your house work and errands, it is time to wind down for the day. Find something quiet that you enjoy. You might be the type to watch TV to wind down, or you might like to write or draw. Personally, I try to avoid TV. If I watch it, I get hooked and fall asleep some hours later in an uncomfortable position. If I choose to watch it, I have to set a limit and choose something fun and calming, like short TV comedies (Bernie Mac, Simpsons, King of the Hill). I do NOT reccomend the news before bed at all. (Frankly, I think it is much more calming to learn the news of current events from the internet. It would do the world well to abandon TV news, which stresses us unnecessarily from the drama. Newspapers are better, but messy and frustrating (the folding and ink smudges). With the internet, we can control what we see much better and find out specific information faster, all in a more calm way.) I often allow myself to watch only a little TV, if I know something good is on, or a fun movie, if I have time, and wind down completely by drawing and writing story ideas and noting the day in my journal. I avoid drinking anything for an hour or two before bed (also do not drink coffee, especially, from late afternoon-- or 4 to 6 hours before bed-- and do not exercise later in the day, either), use the bathroom and change into relaxing clothes right before bed, lay down, get comfortable, say my prayers (this is relaxing and part of my routine), and close my eyes. If sleep does not come right away, it is a problem of mind or body. To relax the body, I tense every muscle in my body and hold the tension for a few seconds and then release it. This allows the muscles to relax and usually allows me to go right to sleep. If I am still awake, it is a problem of mind. I try to banish all thoughts or cover them with a bedtime story I make up, something fantastical and unreal. I'll imagine I'm a princess in another world or that I've found a genie in a bottle and what I'd wish for or that I won a trip to see the world and envision what I'd see. The idea is that it is a self-guided movie in my head and it puts me right to sleep unless my thoughts are too loud to banish. My last resort, which I haven't needed in a while, is to put headphones on and listen to Tranquility, a CD of relaxing sounds, or to one of the others like it.

Hope this helps you.

Oh, I forgot-- I sometimes take a warm bath before bed to relax. I discovered that the petunia-scented bath products kept me awake, though. Also avoid peppermint and a few other aromas that induce wakefulness (look up aromatherapy and learn which do that). Whether it will work for you or not, Rose scents work for me. Musky rose during the day keeps me sedate and on a fairly even keel. Milky rose at night, in a bath, lets me sleep like a baby and I skip the body mind stuff because the bath take care of all that. You might also try winding down with a body massager and foot bath, which also helps a tired body and you can watch TV or a movie or do something on a computer, read or write or draw to wind down while you get a massage and footbath-- multitasking and being pampered, relaxing and rewarding, all at the same time!!!

Before you go to bed do the following:

Do not consume alcohol

Eat carbohydrates

Have some plain yoghurt

Take a shower

When you are in bed, think happy thoughts, remember each good person in your life, do not plan tomorrow, think of work or think of any problems.

switch the radio over to AM. search for a spot between the station that causes staticky noises, then turn it down just enough to hear but not enough to be a bother. the statics are called white noises. it's what babies hear while they are in their mother's womb. it's comforting to them. we all know that babies are the hardest to please. so, if a baby can fall asleep to that, you should be able to.
